A New York Times story this week is adding to the scrutiny on Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar’s past marriage.
The federal investigation into Omar involves a 2009 marriage and whether it was a sham intended to obtain a green card.
A previous Obama-era inquiry in 2016 found some evidence of potential fraud, including evidence suggesting the two were siblings. But that case stalled due to the statute of limitations.
The U.S. Attorney for Minnesota at that time, Andrew Luger, did send a letter to FOX 9 after a report from them that the U.S. Attorney’s Office had opened an investigation into Omar. That letter said “my office is not investigating, nor have we requested an investigation into Ms. Omar.”
But Luger has since clarified that letter was simply a clarification to rebut the station’s report that Luger himself had asked ICE to investigate Omar. Instead, it was used as an exoneration by Omar who went on to win her first term in the U.S. House.
Omar has been a naturalized U.S. citizen since 2000 which is also under investigation. She has continuously denied the allegations and her office is calling the current probe an abuse of power.
Earlier this week, the Department of Justice moved to block the release of search warrant materials tied to Omar’s Washington D.C. residence.
The Justice Department indicated it may support unsealing redacted versions later, but if the judge rules to unseal the records sooner, they will then ask for an emergency stay.
Earlier this month, federal agents searched the Democratic Omar’s Washington, D.C. home, just weeks before the frequent target of President Donald Trump’s criticism stands for reelection in her congressional district in Minnesota.
