CANDO, N.D. (North Dakota Monitor) – Former Republican-endorsed candidate Alex Balazs announced Thursday he will challenge Republican Rep. Julie Fedorchak for North Dakota’s only U.S. House seat.
In his campaign announcement, Balazs pledged to hold regular, in-person town halls and advocate for citizen-led service, veterans, fiscal discipline, border security and priorities that put America first.
Balazs, of Cando, received the endorsement of North Dakota Republicans for the open U.S. House seat during the 2024 state convention in Fargo. However, the support came after Fedorchak withdrew her name from consideration.
Balazs finished fourth out of five candidates during the 2024 primary election for North Dakota’s at-large U.S. House seat with 4% of the statewide vote. Fedorchak won the primary with 46% voter support.
Fedorchak went on to defeat Democratic-NPL Party candidate Trygve Hammer during the 2024 general election with 69% voter support.
Balazs served in three different military branches across 25 years of service. He also served as a project manager for the State Department at different locations around the globe.
While aligned with the Republican platform, Balazs said he will remain an independent thinker on representing North Dakota.
“My background in national security and fiscal responsibility has prepared me to tackle these challenges with clarity and resolve,” he said.
Kate Roberts, spokeswoman for Julie Fedorchak for Congress, said Fedorchak received President Donald Trump’s endorsement for reelection in August.
“She understands North Dakota and delivers results,” Roberts said in a text message. “She enjoys wide support and looks forward to a successful reelection campaign.”
A formal reelection announcement for Fedorchak is expected at a later date.
Candidates must file signature petitions or endorsement documents with the North Dakota Secretary of State’s Office by April 6 to be considered for the 2026 primary election on June 9. The 2026 general election will be Nov. 3.
Former state lawmakers Rick Becker and Tom Campbell are also seeking the North Dakota Republican Party’s nomination for U.S. House of Representatives.
