BISMARCK (KFGO-KVRR) — A new effort is underway to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students in public schools in North Dakota.
Secretary of State Michael Howe says his office received a proposed petition to initiate a constitutional measure for funding of school lunches.
It would require school districts to maximize federal reimbursements for the meals before the final costs are covered by the state.
The Secretary of State and Attorney General have five to seven business days to draft a petition title.
If it’s approved the committee has to collect over 31,000 valid signatures to get it on the ballot next year.
Free lunch bills failed in the last North Dakota legislative session.
