ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – Capitol security will be one of the top issues discussed by state lawmakers when the next Minnesota legislative session begins in February. The Advisory Committee on Capitol Area Security is hosting its next public hearing this afternoon in St. Paul.
“I feel very safe with the troopers around, to be honest,” said Republican Senator Rich Draheim. “But I’m also 6’3” and 400 pounds, I’m not a small guy so there’s not much that scares me on the complex.”
Draheim believes there should be more conversation, and would support any improvements made to the capitol complex.
“There’s room for improvement and I would support that. But I’m not frightened when I’m up there. You know I think communication is key but the world’s a different place today than it was ten years ago.” Draheim says.
Friday’s public hearing will include discussions on proper behavior during sessions and hearings, security drills, and an update from the Department of Public Safety.
