Jim Shaw addresses Fargo City Commission
FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — A bipartisan group of Fargo citizens wants to shake up the election process for mayor and city commission by enacting a non-partisan primary.
Former news director Jim Shaw was among a group addressing the city commission along with current Cass County Commissioner Tony Grindberg and State Representatives Karla Rose Hanson and Scott Wagner.
The group wants a special city election called by October or November to approve a primary.
If it’s approved, the primary would be held next June with the general election in November.
Since the state legislature overturned approval voting in Fargo, Shaw says the city is stuck with an old, unfair system that a majority of voters do not want.
“We cannot go back to a system where city commissioners can be elected with just 15% of the vote or mayors can be elected with just 20%” Shaw told the commissioners during the public comment period.
Current Cass County Commissioner Tony Grindberg told the commission, “What I’ve learned in my public life is that your hardest job as an elected official is to estimate what the silent majority feels. And I hope there is a lot of public attention to this that gives you more feedback on what’s the right decision to make.”
Commissioners made no comment.
