BISMARCK, N.D. (North Dakota Monitor) – The office of North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley says the state will receive $2,536,788 in a settlement with General Motors as part of a settlement over allegations that GM illegally sold driver data.
The suit alleged that GM would collect information about drivers like location information and behaviors, which was then sold to insurance companies. The insurance companies would then use the data in part to set insurance rates.
36 Attorneys General sued GM, saying that from 2016 to 2024 the company sold the driver information to the insurance companies without telling the driver the data could be used to set insurance rates.
As part of the settlement drivers can a request a copy of what data was collected and have it deleted.
South Dakota also settled, Attorney General Marty Jackley says the state will receive 2.6 million dollars. South Dakota’s consumer protection fund will get the money.
