FARGO (KFGO) – Reckless driving is causing costly damage in Fargo. One property owner now faces an estimated $100,000 cleanup bill after drivers tore up a commercial parking lot doing burnouts.
Fargo Police Captain Travis Mosher says getting all that rubber off the pavement will cost the owner six figures. Mosher noted that property owners are stuck paying for the mess even though they did nothing wrong.
The danger stretches far beyond private lots. Mosher said police are seeing extreme speeds on roads across the state. Last week, an officer clocked a driver going 116 miles per hour in a 40-mile-per-hour zone on the way to work.
High-speed crashes have raised alarms across North Dakota. A recent wreck in Bismarck killed two Mandan teens. Now, police across the state want lawmakers to step in.
Mosher said officers plan to talk with state lawmakers during the upcoming January session. Police want new traffic laws with more teeth to punish careless, reckless and exhibition driving.
Mosher said officers do not oppose car clubs, but they want to stop dangerous driving before more people get hurt. Fargo police are also working with city leaders, prosecutors and local judges to update city rules and make sure reckless drivers face real penalties in court.
