64th Avenue S. at I-29 in Fargo
FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — City engineers say they are close to making a decision on a possible interchange at 64th Avenue and Interstate 29 in south Fargo.
The City of Fargo started a study in 2008 on the right-of-way in the northeast corner of the intersection. Transportation Division Engineer Jeremy Gordon says the interchange is needed now more than ever as the population in the area continues to grow.
“We need to make a decision. Either we’re going to go forward with the project, or we’re not going to go forward with the project,” Gordon says.
Gordon says two options are at the top of the list. One is a single roundabout with a traffic signal. The other is two roundabouts.
In late August, residents along 64th Avenue S. were invited to a public forum on the proposed interchange. While there were some who are for the interchange, there have been many who say it should be at 76th Avenue S. instead.
The City of Fargo tries to have interchanges every mile along the interstate, but did not do one at Interstate 29 and 40th Avenue S.
“There’s a two-mile gap between 32nd to 52nd (Avenues). So, 40th Ave is just an underpass. That puts more stress on the adjacent interchanges because it’s not equally distributed throughout the avenues and streets,” Gordon says.
Gordon says even without the interchange, the amount of traffic will continue to grow.
If approved, construction of the interchange can begin in 2028.
