ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – Minnesota will extend a two-year licensing pause for adult day programs starting Feb. 1, 2026.
The Department of Human Services (DHS) says the move will last through January 2028 and aims to tighten oversight and prevent fraud, aligning with Gov. Walz’s recent Executive Order.
Officials say current provider capacity far exceeds demand, and the pause will allow the state to focus on monitoring existing centers.
Adult day programs offer health support, meals, and social activities to reduce isolation and help caregivers.
During the pause, new license applications will be halted, and pending applications canceled, though exceptions will be considered to maintain access statewide.
DHS has also taken steps to combat fraud, including stricter oversight of high-risk Medicaid services, provider disenrollment, and pausing licenses for other home-based care programs.
