MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KFGO/Learfield) – Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says the city is moving forward with a flexible open street design for George Floyd Square.
The plan, shaped by extensive community input, aims to honor George Floyd while creating a space for healing, art, and economic growth.
Officials say the design will allow the street to close for gatherings, restore Metro Transit service, and add new sidewalks, lighting, bikeways, and green infrastructure — while preserving memorial space.
Council Member Andrea Jenkins calls the decision “a victory for community voices” and says it balances reflection with opportunities for Black-owned businesses.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
