Snowmobile on a lake (Minnesota DNR)
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KFGO) – Most of the snowmobile trails in Minnesota aren’t quite ready for riders yet, despite the season opening Monday, Dec. 1. Wade Miller, Snowmobile Program Consultant with the Department of Natural Resources, says there are a number of things that still need to happen.
“Many of the low areas, swamps and especially lakes aren’t frozen up yet, and we need at least 5 to 7 inches of good, clear ice for a snowmobile to operate on a lake,” Miller explains. “The groomers are still going to need another few inches of snow before they can pack and start grooming the trails.”
Miller says while you wait for trails to open, there are a few things to check off your list.
“Folks should make sure that their registrations are current on their snowmobiles. Make sure you have your trail pass, your registration on your snowmobile, and then you should be checking your snowmobile over. Check your bogie wheels. Check your carbides. Make sure all the parts of your snowmobile are operating correctly. Sometimes you have to do some minor maintenance.”
