FARGO (KFGO) – Midwest Communications-owned KFGO has hired Gretchen Hjelmstad as the newest member of the KFGO News team.
Hjelmstad joins the award-winning newsroom, under the direction of Paul Jurgens, with 15 years of experience in local and regional news coverage, non-profit communications, marketing and public relations.
“We had a number of qualified and experienced candidates locally, regionally and nationally that expressed interest in the position and Gretchen rose to the top,” said Jurgens.
“Her working knowledge of the local media market and familiarity with news makers and other decision makers at all levels, including local, state and federal officeholders made our decision fairly easy,” said KFGO Operations Manager Joel Heitkamp. “We had a number of highly respected candidates,” he added.
Hjelmstad was added to the news team following the retirement of long-time news reporter Don Haney. Haney spent nearly 52 years in North Dakota radio. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism and Mass Communications Technologies from North Dakota State University in Fargo. She will be part of the top-rated KFGO Morning Crew with reporter-anchor Ryan Janke, hosts Robbie Daniels and Doug Leier, Meteorologist Tom Szymanski, Farm and Ranch Director Sarah Heinrich and Sports Director Jack Michaels.
A Moorhead resident and native of Hawley, Minnesota, Hjelmstad comes with a dedication for covering local news, engaging with the small businesses community and passion for community service.
