ST. PAUL – Turkey lasers sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, but the state of Minnesota is using them to protect turkeys and chickens from infected birds with the avian flu.
Turkey lasers use an infrared beam that other birds don’t like, keeping them out of turkey barns.
DFL Senator Aric Putnam says the new agriculture budget accounts for these costs. “We were able to put more resources into this program to let more and more turkey and chicken, and poultry producers be able to afford this way of stopping their flocks getting sick.”
Minnesota has more than 600 turkey farms across the state.
