MINNEWAUKAN, N.D. (KFGO) – The Benson County commission is appointing a commissioner as acting sheriff after the county’s chief deputy was charged with multiple felonies and its current sheriff is resigning.
Commissioner Dick Horner will take over sheriff duties at the end of business Friday.
Horner says the resignation of Sheriff Ethan Rode is not related to the arrest and charges against Travis Carlson. Carlson is charged with three counts of felony tampering with public records, and numerous misdemeanor counts of unlawful arrest, refusing to perform duty, and harassment. He is in the Grand Forks County jail.
Horner says he will be sheriff until August 4 when the commission hopes to have an interim sheriff named.
Horner says he wants to assure the public the county will continue providing the law service that citizens expect. He says the commission will resolve the issues it is having and move on.
