BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – Blackout license plates have proven to be wildly popular in other states and they’re coming to North Dakota soon.
“Pretty much everyday, we are getting calls in from people around North Dakota asking when they can get the blackout plates,” said Brad Schaffer, Driver and Vehicle Services Director for the Department of Transportation.
“A lot of people around the country, around North Dakota, they’re very passionate about their vehicles and they’re car people and I think with a blackout plate, it is another way to kind of customize their vehicle, a black plate on a black vehicle or a black plate on like a white vehicle or a light-colored vehicle, it just draws maybe a little more attention and it’s just very, a sleek design,” Schaffer continued.
Schaffer said Minnesota produced 250,000 blackout plates in the first year they were available and they are the most requested plate in Iowa.
Schaffer said the black plates are in stock at vehicle services offices around the state and will start to be issued on August 1. They can also be ordered online.
The cost is $25 more than standard plates. Personalized, vanity blackout plates will run an additional $25.
The plates are expected to generate additional revenue for the state.
Schaffer said over the next two years, it’s estimated that the plates will bring in another $2.9 million. In the 2027-2029 biennium, the projection is $3.8 million.
The money will go to the North Dakota Highway Tax Distribution Fund and be used for road and bridge construction.
