DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KFGO) – A sentencing date has been scheduled for Senator Nicole Mitchell of Woodbury, Minnesota.
The judge says she’ll be sentenced on September 10 in Detroit Lakes. Last Friday, a Becker County District Court Jury convicted Mitchell on two counts of burglary and possession of burglary tools for breaking into her stepmother’s home in April of last year.
During the trial, she testified that she lied to officers about her intent to gather some of her late father’s belongings. She said actually wanted to check on Carol Mitchell, who has Alzheimer’s disease.
One of Mitchell’s attorneys says he expects she will serve at least four months in jail. She’ll resign her seat in the legislature by August 4. Several Republicans have called for Mitchell to step down immediately.
