Rendering of Hector International Airport expansion
FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — Fargo Municipal Airport Authority is asking Fargo City Commissioners to continue to support the 2 mill levy that funds capitol improvements at Hector International.
The airport is in the process of a $200 million terminal expansion and the construction of a $4 million parking ramp and skywalk. $40 million is loaned through the Bank of North Dakota and the federal share is around $80 million.
Airport Authority Board Chair Paula Ekman says losing the mill levy would increase the cash needed for the projects from between $2.8 to $5.5 million in 2026 and 2027. Ekman says they also use the funding when requesting grants.
“And the other part of that is that the match is really important so if it doesn’t look like we have our local support it’s tougher to get that state and federal funding,” said Ekman.
If the mills are reduced or removed, it could cost the airport between $15-$31 million over the next 10 years. That includes the new property tax cap of 3%, which will impact city funding.
City commissioners will consider the request and take action at a later meeting.
