DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KFGO) – A Becker County District Court Judge has approved a delay for the trial of State Senator Nicole Mitchell of Woodbury, Minnesota.
Attorneys for the Democrat asked for the delay citing the shootings of two state lawmakers over the weekend. Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed while another legislator and his wife were shot and wounded.
Mitchell’s attorneys asked for the continuance out of respect for the victims and to allow the partisan political temperature in Minnesota time to cool down. Becker County Attorney Brian McDonald did not object to the request.
Mitchell was arrested in April 2024 after Detroit Lakes Police responded to the home of her stepmother on a report of a burglary. Mitchell has said that she was in the house to collect some of the belongings of her late father, including his ashes.
A new trial date has yet to be set. It’s the second time that the trial has been delayed.
