MOORHEAD (KFGO) – As part of the Minnesota AED project, which is managed by the University of Minnesota and funded by grant from the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office is one of 25 agencies in the state to receive a LUCAS device.
A LUCAS device is a machine that does chest compressions during CPR.
Sheriff Mark Empting says it pushes at the right speed and depth, which is difficult for people to do for long periods of time. Often times, Empting says deputies arrive on scene prior to volunteer rescue or EMS and having a LUCAS device will greatly improve a patient’s chance for survival and free up a responder to tend to other critical tasks.
The cost of the LUCAS device, plus the added accessories that were included is $24,757. The grant covers the cost of the device and includes a one-year warranty for the device and four-years of annual maintenance and battery coverage.
