JAMESTOWN, N.D. (KFGO) – The Jamestown Police Department is suspending its criminal investigation into the case of a fetus found by a construction company in November.
The company found the buried fetus along with broken pieces of an amber brown glass jar during a project dig.
Major Justin Blinsky says investigators determined the baby boy was stillborn due to complications with the umbilical cord. Blinsky says the fetus was about 34 weeks in gestational age based on measurements and characteristics.
The fetus was put in preservation fluid in a jar that was likely manufactured sometime between the 1930s and 1940s.
Blinsky says the fetus being in preservation fluid makes it difficult to narrow down a date of death. He says the post-mortem exam indicates the remains are historic. The department is not speculating on a date of death time frame, but the findings indicate it presumably happened many decades ago.
While the criminal investigation is suspended, investigators are still asking for anyone with information to come forward.
