BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO/KVRR) — Over 55,000 homeowners have already applied for North Dakota’s Primary Residence Tax Credit.
Established in 2023, and expanded in 2025, the primary residence credit can take up to $1600 off a homeowners property tax bill.
The entry portal opened just after midnight on New Year’s Day. State Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus says homeowners should apply for the credit sooner rather than later.
“It’s a busy world and it falls on the backburner and it’s on the to-do list. We just don’t want to see anyone missing the deadline, which is April 1. That’s the deadline to apply, but better safe than sorry and apply as soon as possible,” Kroshus said.
According to Kroshus, some residents who use the credit along with other available tax credits, like military housing credits, end up paying nothing in state property taxes.
