FLANDREAU, S.D. (KFGO) – Two pedestrians died in a crash on Wednesday evening about one mile south of Flandreau, South Dakota.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says preliminary crash information indicates the driver of an SUV was traveling south on 480th Avenue around 10 p.m. on Dec. 17.
As the vehicle approached the intersection with 232nd Street, they came upon two pedestrians walking in the southbound lane. The Moody County Sheriff’s Office says this area has no lighting along the road and the driver says, by the time they saw the pedestrians, they couldn’t stop in time.
The SUV hit both pedestrians. A 25-year-old woman from Wentworth, SD and 34-year-old man from Springfield, SD were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 55-year-old woman from Ruthton, MN, was not injured.
The names of the involved have not been released pending notification of family members. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
