FARGO (KFGO) – Fargo Police held a memorial service for fallen officer Jake Wallin Monday morning at police headquarters.
Wallin was shot and killed by a gunman who ambushed police officers while they tended to a traffic crash on July 14th, 2023.
Wallin’s family and fiance, Fargo Police officers, EMTs, firefighters, and Fargo city commissioners were on hand.
Police Chaplin, Pastor Jonas Bundy gave the invocation.
“Today, God, we grieve deeply, the loss of a son and brother, fiance, and friend. A brother in uniform,” Bundy said. “Lord, Jake meant so much to so many. His life will be one that is remembered as one who gave himself for the protection and wellbeing of others. So, today, we remember his courage and his dedication. We are grateful for his life and the ultimate sacrifice he gave in service to others.”
The program included comments and a presentation to Wallin’s parents by Police Chief Dave Zibolski, the playing of taps, lowering the flag, and ringing of a memorial bell. There were also two videos – one remembering Wallin and one highlighting the new officer training room named after him.
Zibolski said it is a difficult, but important day to remember.
“Jake Wallin was a prime example of one of those, committed, energetic, new officers that had a vision for community service and was 100% committed to that,” Zibolski said. “It was such a tragedy to see him taken in this way. It’s a tragedy to lose anyone, but this was such an unnecessary act of aggression. It’s hard for everyone to take in, but I think as we continue to memorialize their service, like we do with officer Jason Moszer, there’s some closure and relief and it helps people get through that grieving process.”
Officers Tyler Hawes and Andrew Dotas, who were both also shot that day, and Zach Robinson – the officer who shot the gunman – were in attendance.
