Hawthorne house deemed a dangerous building
FARGO, (KFGO/KVRR) — The Fargo City Commission voted to deem a property in the historic Hawthorne neighborhood a dangerous building.
The owner of the property has until Aug. 23 to make major improvements or demolish the house, or the city will tear it down.
Permits were issued in late 2023 to renovate the house that was built in 1890 into a 3-unit apartment, but no work has been done. It was posted as dangerous in March.
There have been 11 calls for service to the property this year and neighbors have complained about the eyesore.
“Mr. Stonestreet has had more than adequate time to transform this building into something of value to our neighborhood. Instead he has allowed it to become an unwelcome and unsafe nuisance doing nothing to add to the property value of neighboring homes and businesses,” said Heather Johnson who lives In Hawthorne neighborhood.
If the city ends up demolishing the property, the cost would be assessed to the property and paid through property taxes to recoup the money.
