THOMPSON, N.D. (KFGO) — Two Fargo men have been charged with possessing explosives after troopers say they found a home-made pipe-bomb in their car.
A state trooper stopped a car Wednesday morning on I-29 south of Grand Forks for illegal reflective tint. Court records say during the stop, the driver and passenger were agitated and appeared nervous. The trooper asked for a K9, and the dog alerted to illegal substances inside the vehicle.
While searching the car, court records say officers found a cylindrical-device wrapped in tape with a fuse. The passenger told troopers the device was a smoke bomb. The Grand Forks Bomb Squad was called, and identified the device as a home-made explosive device. Southbound I-29 was closed for about two hours for safety while the bomb squad worked. The device was detonated on-site.
Gabriel Messmer and Christopher Ringsrud-Knowles are charged with possessing explosives. They face up to two years in prison if convicted.
