Derrick Thompson (Hennepin Co. Jail)
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/KFGO) – The jury in the Derrick Thompson has reached a verdict. They have found Thompson guilty on all charges including 3rd-degree murder, the most serious of the charges.
Thompson was charged with five counts of third degree murder and 10 counts of criminal vehicular manslaughter in a June 2023 crash that killed five young Somali women.
In his rented Cadillac Escalade, Thompson was seen on video speeding through a red light on Lake Street and slamming into their car.
Investigators say he was going 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
The defense originally indicated Thompson’s brother Damarco was actually the one driving. However, Demarco Thompson ended up taking a deal in return for his testimony where he said he was not the driver – and Derrick Thompson was.
Thompson has already been found guilty on federal charges related to guns and drugs found inside his SUV.
