EAST PEORIA, Ill. – East Peoria’s City Council wants more time to consider ways to regulate smoke and tobacco shops, so they don’t turn up in areas considered undesirable.
The council Tuesday night voted unanimously to extend its moratorium another six months. The moratorium has been in place since last October.
In a memo to the council, East Peoria’s Planning and Community Development Director Ty Livingston said staff and the city attorney have identified several approaches, which still need to be vetted by the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Commission.
Livingston told 25 News, the extension “will allow the city council and staff to “identify the best way(s) to further manage these types of uses and ensure they do not proliferate in areas where they’re not desired.”
The moratorium is now set to expire on October 1, 2025.
