(Reuters) -The U.S. FDA and HHS announced on Tuesday a set of actions and initiatives focused on infant formula to ensure the ongoing quality, safety, nutritional adequacy and resilience of the domestic infant formula supply.
The Food and Drug Administration said it will begin a nutrient review process and increase testing for heavy metals and other contaminants in infant formula, as well as encourage companies to develop new infant formulas.
“The FDA will use all resources and authorities at its disposal to make sure infant formula products are safe and wholesome for the families and children who rely on them,” said U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The FDA also said it is encouraging companies to work with the health agency on any questions regarding increased transparency and clearer labeling.
